Dental Implant Placement Procedure

Before beginning the dental implant placement procedure, Dr. Moran will examine your teeth and gums to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for implants. The implant itself is a titanium post that functions as the root of the tooth; it is anchored in the jawbone, and supports a replacement tooth. The placement of the implant post, the replacement tooth, and the piece that connects them (called an abutment) is spread into three different stages:

Appointment 1: Oral surgery must be performed to place the titanium implant in the jawbone. The goal is for the bone tissue to grow around the implant so it stays securely in place and anchors the new tooth. It may take several months for the implant and surrounding bone tissue to completely heal.

Appointment 2: Abutment placement is another surgery, although less invasive than the first. The abutment is a small piece that is affixed to the top of the titanium post and holds the prosthetic tooth in position. Healing should take several weeks following the procedure.

Appointment 3: Attaching the replacement tooth is a simple procedure in which Dr. Moran screws the dental prosthetic (usually a crown) onto the exposed portion of the abutment. The tooth will be made of either porcelain or acrylic, and will match the appearance of your natural surrounding teeth.

We may recommend a teeth whitening treatment so your improved smile is bright and beautiful. Dr. Moran can also place and restore dental implants as part of a complete smile makeover.

Candidates for Dental Implants

During your initial consultation, Dr. Moran will determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants. There must be sufficient bone density and healthy gums for the implant to be securely placed. Patients should be committed to maintaining dental implants properly. Good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and routine checkups are necessary to keep dental implants healthy and looking great. Implants can be placed for a single tooth, multiple teeth, or to anchor a dental bridge.

Risks or Side Effects of Dental Implants

It is important to be well informed of risks and side effects prior to commencing any treatment. Immediately following the procedure, your gums may be swollen and you may experience some soreness in your mouth. As you heal, you should eat only soft foods and practice proper cleaning habits to avoid infection. Additionally, Dr. Moran will want to see you to check your dental implants as they heal.
